Future Scenarios in Water-Food-Energy Nexus

Awareness of the complex relationship between water, energy and food security has grown in recent years. Water is needed for almost all forms of energy production; energy is needed to transport and treat water; and producing food requires both energy and water. These are just a few of the linkages in the so-called water-energy-food nexus. In the coming decades, growing populations and prosperity will continue to put pressure on these resources. Cities can play an important role. Water, energy and food stresses will be most acute in urban areas, and they can become focal points for innovative solutions. In his speech at the World Water Week Founders Business Seminar, Jeremy Bentham, Vice President Global Business Environment and Head of Shell’s Scenarios Team, provides an energy producer’s perspective on the water-energy-food nexus in an urban context.
