Developing an Open Manufacturing Campus in Turnhout
On 8th November 2011 the BiELAt conference (creating business through cooperation in the Eindhoven-Leuven-Aachen region) took place in the C-mine in Genk (a conference center in the old mines – really an experience). For this conference 10 business initiatives were selected to go through a process of refinement and business development.
Because of our experience and knowledge in the area of campus development I had the honor to be invited for the Open Manufacturing Campus (OMC) initiative being started on the industrial area of Philips in Turnhout. Paul Peeters, the Project Leader of Philips, has been leading this initiative and will become the leader of the future OMC organization. The process we went through was called “Future Sketches”, was organized by the BiELAt Foundation and supported by a team of the Vlerick Management School under the leadership of Walter Van Dyck, Associate Professor Innovation Management.
We mapped the future driving forces and made a time schedule for our “dream” ideas 2020, e.g. "attracting young professional with the relevant manufacturing expertise".
On the 22nd November we were invited to the campus of the Vlerick Management School in Leuven to work on the next steps and develop a concrete business idea.
Our OMC team developed the idea of Manufacturing Excellence Center for cost efficient manufacturing of small series and customized products. At the end of the day Paul Peeters pitched our story in a kind of “Dragon Den” session where challenging questions were asked.
The process so far was a nice experience and absolutely to learn from:
- Future Sketch systematic translated into a concrete business idea works very well
- Positioned in an BiELAt context it showed the added value of an interregional approach
- A cross-expertise and cross-cultural approach delivers a greater creativity and more views.
During the next month the OMC team will need to benchmark and fine-tune the future plans.
We will support as much as possible.
